SOCCER legend Frank Worthington delighted thousands of fans with his skills.

Those skills earned him a clutch of awards in a career spanning 882 games.

But now the former Huddersfield Town and England star, who lives at Outlane, is to part with one his treasured mementoes.

He has put a notice on the eBay internet auction site offering his Adidas Golden Boot for sale - at a starting price of £15,500.

The boot was presented to Frank in 1979 as top goal scorer in the then First Division, now The Premiership.

His 24 goals for Bolton Wanderers gave him the award, just ahead of Liverpool's Kenny Dalglish.

A family friend, who is organising the auction, said: "Frank was one of the great characters of English football.

"I am selling the Golden Boot for Frank, who is 55, to help fund his retirement. This is an exceptional opportunity: it might be many years before such an item is offered again.

"Worthy will always be remembered as a flair player. One of his goals that season, against Ipswich Town, was so brilliantly controlled that it is still shown regularly on television. Alan Gowling headed the ball to Frank, who juggled it three or four times with his back to the goal in what looked like a drawn-out tease. Then he flicked the ball over the head of defender Terry Butcher before sending a sweet volley into the net.

"In appearance he looked more at home as a film star than a footballer. But on the pitch, his style was worthy of many Oscars."

The award of the Adidas Golden Boot, at a ceremony in Paris, was a career highlight for the player, who scored twice for England.

The boot is in the original grey presentation box, and is in excellent condition apart from a small dent at the front.

The eBay auction site invites bids starting at £15,500 but to date, none have been tabled.

It is to remain on the website until Sunday.
