NEWSOME couple Arthur and Betty Gafney are celebrating their golden wedding.

The couple married at Christ Church, Moldgreen, after meeting while working at Ralph Wood's mill in Bradley Mills.

Mr Gafney, 79, went on to work at George Wilson construction engineers in Manchester Road for 12 years after serving with the RAF during the war.

He then worked as an attendant in the Queensgate Market for 14 years.

Mrs Gafney, 73, worked on a cooked food counter in the Queensgate Market for 18 years.

The couple, who have lived in Ashenhurst Avenue for 40 years, have two sons and a daughter.

They will be celebrating tomorrow with a party for 60 family and friends.

Mr and Mrs Gafney are both keen gardeners.
