They came from different parts of Ireland, but met as neighbours living on the same Huddersfield street.

Now Michael and Eileen Carr have celebrated their golden wedding.

The teenage sweethearts both lived on Manchester Road after arriving from Ireland during the 1950s.

They married at the former St Brigid’s RC Church at Longwood and set up home on Manchester Road before moving to Crosland Moor.

The couple spent three years on Kipling Close before going to live on Park Road West, where they have remained for 43 years.

Mr Carr first worked at Howard Haigh’s mill at Longroyd Bridge for 18 months and later at Brook Motors for six years.

He then started work for David Brown’s at Lockwood where he worked for 32 years until his retirement in 2001.

Mrs Carr worked at town centre shoe shops Trueform and Bata’s, and then at Middlemost Mill, Birkby, before getting married.

She then gave up work to have the couple’s seven children before returning as a nursing auxiliary at St Luke’s Hospital, where she spent 15 years.

She later worked at Peter’s coffee shop in the town centre for eight years until her retirement.

The couple have seven children, 21 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

They celebrated their anniversary with a church blessing and a Bradley Golf Club meal for family and friends.
