CHILDHOOD sweethearts Keith and Maureen Midwood have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

The Almondbury couple met as teenagers when they worked at R Butterworths and Sons textile mill in Meltham.

Mr Midwood told the Examiner he can still remember their very first date.

He said: “It was on December 27 and every year I buy her something.”

Mr and Mrs Midwood’s four sons Andrew, Christopher, Richard and Mark, took the couple out for a surprise meal to celebrate fifty happy years together.

The couple also have two daughters, Emma and Jill –who have moved away from Huddersfield – and nine grandchildren.

The pensioners both share a love of gardening and like to go for walks together.

Mr Midwood, 68, said: “Neither of us drink or smoke – we just like spending time together.”
