It’s a job interview with a difference and the shy and retiring need not apply.

Trendy Caribbean restaurant chain Turtle Bay is coming to Huddersfield, holding mass auditions for staff.

More than 100 hopefuls will descend on the Media Centre in Northumberland Street, Huddersfield, later this month, aiming to land one of the 50 or so jobs on offer.

The drop-in style mass job interview will include limbo dancing and rapping.

The Examiner revealed last month how fast-expanding Turtle Bay plans to open a new £800,000 fast food restaurant in the former Cotton Factory premises on the corner of King Street and Zetland Street, just outside the Kingsgate Centre.

The chain, which has 18 restaurants around the country, boasts a fun, Caribbean-style party atmosphere and bosses want to find people who fit the bill.

The selection process, which will also include a traditional one-to-one interview, is designed for candidates to show off their “guest hosting and teamwork skills.”

Turtle Bay, which serves the likes of jerk chicken, fish curry and goat burgers along with rum-based cocktails, plans to open the new 8,634 sq ft Huddersfield restaurant in November.

Eddie Coyne, openings manager for Turtle Bay, said the recruitment day would feature some less-than-conventional activities designed to break the ice and reflect the restaurant’s laid-back Caribbean ethos of great food and good times.

He added: “Participants will get the chance to show off their performance skills as part of a group limbo session, and we’ll then work in a group setting to create a collage and rap whilst we conduct one-to-one interviews.

“The groups will then present back their collage and rap on what they think represents Turtle Bay.”

The restaurant is recruiting for between 50 and 60 people for its Huddersfield site across a variety of roles including waiting staff, bar managers and kitchen teams.

The recruitment day, originally planned for August 25, had to be put back due to popular demand.

It’s still not too late to take part. Anyone wanting to register for the recruitment day should e-mail eddie.coyne@turtlebay.co.uk or visit the recruitment website.
