Mills, whippets, flat caps and the Yorkshire landscape all feature in a unique bike project.

A knitting and crochet project is being launched as part of the Yorkshire Festival 2014 - the first ever arts festival in its 111 year history to precede the Grand Départ.

Cassandra Kilbride’s The Woolly Bike Trail project will bring the creative community together to spin a yarn.

Cassandra will take ten bikes and will work with communities in ten Yorkshire towns and cities, to create Yorkshire themed woolly bike covers.

She will be at the Oil Can Cafe in the Carding Shed Hepworth on March 25 and 26 and at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield on April 9 and 16.

And Cassandra wants local knitters and crocheters to join her.

She said: “When I devised the project concept I wanted the bikes as a full set to represent all the things that make Yorkshire, so distinctive as a county but more specifically for each bike to represent the town and community that will be creating it.

“Flat caps and whippets seemed a perfect fit with Holmfirth’s Last of the Summer Wine image and I love Huddersfield’s Yorkshire stone buildings.”

All of the bikes will go on show at the LBT from June 6-26 before going on their own tour of Yorkshire the following 12 months.

All workshops are free to attend but booking is essential and participants must be able to either knit or crochet.
