THEY sent him a £1,500 bill for gas he’d never used, apologised for their error and promised never to send him any more letters.

But now British Gas have sent Phillip Wood, 61, from Fartown, another bill for more than £1,700.

Mr Wood, a yarn buyer, received a letter welcoming him to British Gas – together with a bill for £1,568.86 for three-and-a-half years’ gas – on March 7.

But grandfather Phil had always bought his gas from Npower since he moved to the flat over three-and-a-half years ago.

After the Examiner contacted British Gas the company admitted Mr Wood was not their customer and he owed them nothing.

British Gas also promised Mr Wood he would receive no more letters from them and they would send him ‘a goodwill gesture’.

But on March 24 Mr Wood received a bill from British Gas for £1,728.73 together with a £50 call-out fee from the day before.

Mr Wood said: “It unnerved me again.

“It’s causing me all this stress and strain.

“They said they would send me a goodwill gesture. It better be a very good goodwill gesture because I’m at my wits’ end.”

A British Gas spokesman said: “We apologise to Mr Wood for wrongly sending him a bill. This was due to the account not being fully closed down in our archive system. We have now corrected this and Mr Wood should not receive any further bills.”
