A man killed in a road crash at Flockton was a 22-year-old from Huddersfield.

Damian Wood died at the scene on Barnsley Road and flowers along with poignant tributes have been left at the scene.

He was driving a Citroen C4 when it was involved in a collision with a Vauxhall Insignia estate car near Flockton village 6.42am on Wednesday.

The Citroen overturned and careered into a field. Mr Wood was cut free but had sadly already died.

Police later said a Peugeot van had also been involved and the driver had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Mr Wood’s death has shocked and devastated his family and friends who have left floral tributes at the scene.

His parents and brother Aaron told how their son and brother was ‘the light of their lives and will continue to burn brightly in heaven.”

A bottle of whiskey and lemonade – believed to be Mr Wood’s favourite drink – were also attached to the lamppost with plastic cups.

Mr Wood’s grandparents left a message of condolence which reads: “Damian, You’ll be so so missed and we will always love you and you will never be forgotten. Love you always.”

Another tribute from Anne-Marie included a poem describing her ‘shining star’ and how she will always miss him.

Kieran McLean said: “I don’t even know were to start. The memories I will treasure for ever ! I just wish I wasn’t saying this so soon. You had so much to look forward to. You were about to take the biggest journey in life. I miss you so much and I always will. They say time’s a healer but I think in time we get used to living with the pain because this pain will never go! We’ll meet again.”

And Marc said: “I met Damian quite a few times. What a lovely guy.”

Meanwhile investigations continue into the cause of the collision.

The van driver was later released on bail pending further inquiries.

West Yorkshire Police’s Major Collision and Enquiry Team has appealed for witnesses to contact them on 101.
