HUDDERSFIELD Railway Station’s historic charms are to be illuminated at night.

Kirklees Planning Committee yesterday approved plans for lamps to light up the station’s Grade I-listed facade.

Warm white fluorescent lights and LED spotlights will be used to highlight the portico (main entrance to the station), the colonnades (single storey sections to either side of the entrance) and pediment (triangular feature above the main entrance).

It is hoped the lighting will complement the revamped St George’s Square.

Members of the planning committee unanimously approved the lighting but expressed concerns.

Clr Barbara Jones said: “We are highlighting a building in an advanced state of disrepair and drawing attention to it.”

Clr Tony Brice added: “I think it’s a good idea but why aren’t the two pubs the Head of Steam and Kings Head included in this?”
