A new Middle Eastern restaurant will bring an abandoned shop back to life.

The old Your Move estate agents on Cross Church Street will be transformed after lying empty for about four years.

Ghassan Bateha has been given approval for his plans to open a Syrian/Lebanese grill.

He has vowed the new eatery – to be called Ugarit – will offer “amazing grilled meats that will be the best in Huddersfield”.

Mr Bateha said: “I’m very pleased to get permission to open.

“It’s great to be in Huddersfield and to do something special.”

Mr Bateha moved to London from Syria eight years ago and is now planning to re-locate to Huddersfield to run the restaurant.

About ten jobs will be created.

Speaking to the Examiner, he said the paperwork was now underway and he hoped construction would begin in March with the restaurant opening by early May.

The Grade 2 Listed premises next to Five bar needs a thorough make-over to create a large open plan restaurant.

The front door will be moved and the wooden windows refurbished.
