A Greetland man has admitted stealing a £15,000 defibrillator belonging to the Yorkshire Ambulance Service during a night out in Halifax last month.

Samuel Conyers, 24, was said to have been drunk when he picked up a bag containing the valuable device in the Silver Street area.

Details of the case were not revealed during today’s brief hearing at Bradford Crown Court, but it is understood that a paramedic was dealing with a member of the public when Conyers took the bag.

The Lifepak 15 defibrillator was fitted with a tracking device and Conyers was arrested with the stolen machine after being traced by police.

Barrister Ian Howard, for Conyers, said his client had admitted the theft on the basis that he did not realise what was in the bag when he took it.

Judge Peter Benson told Conyers, of Longley Gardens, Saddleworth Road, that his bail would be extended until his sentence hearing on October 30.

“You’ve pleaded guilty now to the theft of some very valuable equipment, a defibrillator worth £15,000,” the judge told Conyers.

“The court will be considering all sentencing options, including custody, but your plea will stand you in good stead when you are sentenced.”
