A BIG gritting operation has been mounted in Huddersfield to keep traffic flowing in freezing conditions.

Highways crews are on the alert after more snow was forecast.

A spokesman said: "We have been gritting morning and evening for the last week to cope with snow and freezing conditions.

"Heavy showers have made matters more complicated as it has been washing the salt away.

"Yesterday we gritted at 5am and our gritters remained out all morning to help in the worse-affected areas, such as Denby Dale, Holmfirth, the Greenfield Road and Holme Moss.

"The poor conditions are likely to continue into the weekend and we will grit accordingly."

About two inches of snow fell quickly in Marsden yesterday morning and some people had to dig out their cars at Pole Moor on Thursday.

Across the region North Yorkshire Police said the A170 was blocked at Sutton Bank, near Thirsk, yesterday.

Sporadic snowfalls have also caused problems in South Yorkshire.
