A WOMAN evacuated to Huddersfield from Guernsey at the age of five wants to trace her wartime friend.

Pamela Bougourd lived in Cowcliffe with her mother, sister and brother.

Her father, together with two other brothers and a sister, remained in Guernsey.

The Bougourds were among more than 20,000 men, women and children evacuated from the island before occupation by the Nazis on June 30 1940.

Thousands came to Yorkshire and Pamela and her family lived next to Cowcliffe School. Six other Guernsey families lived nearby.

During her five years in Huddersfield, Pamela became great friends with a Huddersfield girl, Betty Mitchell, who lived in Hopkinson Road, Sheepridge.

When Pamela returned to Guernsey in 1945, aged 10, she and Betty wrote to each other until their late teens but then lost touch.

Since then, Pamela – now Mrs Pamela Stonebridge – has tried to trace Betty several times without success.

Pamela’s search has now been taken up by author Gillian Mawson who has interviewed Pamela and 200 other former evacuees for a new book.

Guernsey Evacuees: The Forgotten Evacuees of the Second World War will be published on November 1.
