Gunshots were fired yards from a children's centre in Dalton this afternoon.

Officers were called to the junction of Holays and Harpe Inge shortly after 3pm following reports from members of the public of shots being fired.

The incident followed a collision involving a number of vehicles.

A blue Renault Clio was left abandoned at the scene and it is believed that two silver vehicles were also involved.

Police are keen to hear from any witnesses who have not yet come forward or anyone with information about those involved.

Det Supt Nick Wallen said they were looking for 'potentially very dangerous individuals,' adding: "This incident has taken place in the middle of the afternoon in a busy area within 100 yards of a childrens centre.

"Thankfully no bystanders have been injured, but at this stage we do not know if any of the individuals in the vehicles involved have been hurt as a result of the firearms discharges or the collision.

"A blue Renault Clio, registration number Y726BJT, has been left at the scene. We are keen to hear from anyone who knows who owns or uses this vehicle.

"We would also like to hear from any further witnesses to the collision itself or aftermath or anyone who has seen damaged vehicles being driven away from the scene.

"We would urge anyone with information which could help our ongoing enquiries to please come forward as a matter of urgency.

Anyone with information is asked to either call Kirklees District CID via 101 or to pass information anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
