A hair and beauty student did wheely well at her end of year show with a Tour de France themed barnet.

Emily Holland's bicycle hair piece, made from six bags of synthetic hair and Oasis floristry foam, was the overall winner at the Kirklees College catwalk show that tested students' management, hair and beauty designs.

Emily, from Honley, said she came up with the idea after seeing the village's trimmings in preparation for the Tour de France .

She said: "It's the hot topic at the moment so I thought it would be something different. It took me about a week to make it.

"My model, Jessica Earnshaw, was really excited about it. She had to wear it on the catwalk and I think it got a bit heavy towards the end!

"I work in a hairdresser's in Honley and they might put the bike in the window so everyone will be able to see it!"

Lisa Buckley, head of department, said: “It was our annual awards evening for health and beauty students across the campus and they all did an amazing job.

“They all had two models to work with and a budget to work to.

“The students were really good, we saw some exceptional work and Emily's bike hair design was very impressive.

“All our students worked really hard and passed and the catwalk is evidence of what they have achieved.”

Students were given a budget to work towards, which aims to build their management skills as they head out into the workplace.

Kirklees College has around 300 hair and beauty students, based at the Waterfront campus , in Dewsbury and at the college’s unique Hair Academy at Market Street in Huddersfield.

Lisa explained: “ The Academy is our own salon lead by a tutor with level two and three students working on clients who can walk in off the street for a hair cut.

“It’s industrialised with 14 stations and a brilliant environment for clients and the students to learn and be assessed in a real salon.”
