Half a month’s rainfall could hit Huddersfield in the space of 24 hours.

That was the warning from weatherman Paul Stevens as the current warm spell was expected to end with a bang.

Temperatures hit 22.4°C (72°F) this afternoon but are expected to cool down noticeably over the weekend with downpours and storms.

That spells gloomy news for organisers of Honley Show and other outdoor events in Huddersfield.

“Wherever you are going it will be case of a coat, a brolly and even Wellingtons,” said Mr Stevens.

“As we forecast, things are going downhill tonight.

“The heavy rain should sweep in through the night and we could end up with as much as 40mm over the course of 24 hours, half the average rainfall for the whole month.

“We may see the worst of the weather move away by Saturday morning but there will be no respite as there will be the threat of more rain all day.

“It will feel a good deal cooler and that’s the same for Sunday as we hold on to NE winds.

“It may brighten into next week”.
