HALF the traders in a Huddersfield shopping arcade have joined the campaign for Sunday opening.

Eight out of the 16 traders in Queensgate Market Arcade want to take advantage of an extra day’s opening in a bid to compete with High Street stores.

Style Lab, Lincoln’s Florists, Snooty’s Fast Food, Huddersfield Pet Supplies, Card Circle, Quality Butchers, Mode and Missy are all supporting the move.

But they need to be given the go-ahead from Kirklees Council first.

Together they have submitted a petition to the council asking for a six-month trial period.

Richard Wardle, owner of Huddersfield Pet Supplies, said: “We have a further four shops that if trade is there will open on Sundays but because of staffing do not want to commit at the moment.

“Eight out of sixteen shops trading in the arcade that want to open on Sundays are willing to give customer discounts to generate trade on Sundays.

“We want to bring the market up-to-date with the seven-day trading the high street has to offer.”

A Kirklees Council spokeswoman said they would be discussing the matter with traders.

She added: “However, we understand they are not all in agreement about opening on Sunday.”
