A BUSY road was shut for three months yesterday and one restaurant owner is ‘extremely worried’ about losing trade.

Nurul Islam, owner of Tamanna’s Indian Restaurant on Halifax Road told the Examiner his business will suffer from the extensive roadworks on Halifax Road.

Inbound lanes are now shut between Ainley Top roundabout and the traffic lights by the Cavalry Arms pub

Mr Islam said: “We’re going to miss out on a lot of passing trade.

“We have many people stopping to eat because it’s the main road into Huddersfield and we’re the first high class Indian restaurant you come to.”

Mr Islam said there were diversion signs on the roundabout for other businesses but not for Tamanna’s.

He said: “We’re going to lose out, they should have had the decency to put up some diversion signs for our business.

“They’ve put a sign up for the Italian restaurant and Briar Court Hotel but not for us.”

Traffic will be able to move out of Huddersfield, but the road will be closed off in the other direction in various stages over the 13 weeks.

The work is in order to replace a gas main and United Utilities are expected to finish the work by early April.

A United Utilities spokesman said: “We are aware that this is quite a long job and we are working with Kirklees Council to ensure we keep disruption to an absolute minimum.

“It is essential work. It is just unfortunate that sometimes these pipes are in places where people go every day.

“We are doing it to make sure the system is robust and safe for people.”

Traffic leaving the motorway at junction 24 (Ainley Top) is now diverted down Lindley Moor Road and back into Huddersfield via New Hey Road.

Vehicles from Halifax are directed to Brighouse on to Bradford Road. From Elland bypass diversions are along Fixby Road and down Bradford Road.
