PEOPLE with learning difficulties should feel safer in Halifax town centre thanks to a new initiative.

Calderdale Council is spearheading the ‘Safer Places’ scheme.

This means that busy public places become a ‘safe haven’ for vulnerable adults in need of help.

Buildings taking part include: the Woolshops; the bus station; the central library; the Piece Hall; and Calderdale College.

Contact cards with the ‘Safe Places’ logo have been distributed to people with learning difficulties.

If they feel ill or distressed or have been bullied or been a victim of crime, someone will be on hand to help.

Sarah Leach, Michael Mitchell and Paul Howarth, all volunteers for the group Safety Net, have trained staff .

Mayor of Calderdale Clr Nader Fekri said: “The Safe Places scheme is a simple and effective idea to provide easily recognisable safe havens.

“It is a credit to the Safety Net team that we have been able to work in partnership with those experiencing such difficulties to find out first hand about the kind of problems faced.”
