A female bookmaker was threatened with a hammer during a terrifying robbery at a betting shop in Almondbury last night.

The robber stormed into Jack Pearsons’ office in Northgate wearing a motorcycle helmet and smashed the glass of the display with the hammer before demanding cash.

The assistant handed over a quantity of cash and the man then fled the store.

Police response offices were sent to the scene shortly after 7.30pm and the West Yorkshire police helicopter was scrambled to help locate the suspect.

A motorbike was recovered a short distance from the scene.

A 17-year-old boy has since been arrested and is in custody.

Det Insp Andrew Leonard said: “We were called to an armed robbery at Jack Pearsons in Almondbury. A female relief manager was behind the counter when a man entered wearing a motorcycle helmet.

“He produced a hammer and struck the screen in front of the counter.

“He then demanded cash and the assistant handed it over and he fled.

“A motorbike was recovered a short distance away.”

“A police search of the area was assisted by the police helicopter and one suspect is in custody.”
