Details have been unveiled for this week’s huge protest in support of Huddersfield’s A&E services.

And organisers of Saturday’s planned march and rally hope many thousands will turn out for the demonstration.

They expect it to be one of the biggest protests Huddersfield has ever seen, as many take to the streets to show their support for the battle to keep full A&E services at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

Local MPs including Barry Sheerman and Jason McCartney are expected to address the crowds.

The rally meets in St George’s Square at 11.30am and will then set off on a route around the town centre at 12 noon.

From the Square, the marchers will go down Northumberland Street, turn right on to Lord Street and then right again up Kirkgate past Huddersfield Parish Church.

They will then turn left on New Street, right up Cloth Hall Street and right into Market Street and Railway Street to return to the Square.

There will be stewards at all points along the march to help people.

Organisers have insisted it is a family event and said: “Enjoy the event, be loud and proud”.

Karl Deitch, one of the campaign organisers, said: “I’m really looking forward to this march.

“It’s definitely not one to be missed, this is for sure. Let’s make this massive.

“One Aim, One Fight, One Result.”

Meanwhile campaigners spent the weekend gathering many more signatures on a petition to fight the proposals to shift A&E services from the Royal Infirmary to Calderdale.

Campaigners were out in the Kingsgate Centre in Huddersfield, at Asda in Bradford Road and at the Mrs Sunderland Music Festival collecting names.

The petition on the Government website calling for the plans to be scrapped is now fast approaching the 60,000 mark.
