They were there in their thousands to show their feelings.

And the general view of those fighting to save Huddersfield Royal Infirmary’s A & E unit from being moved to Calderdale Royal Hospital was summed up in one word: “Wow”.

Many took to social media during and after the huge protest march and rally and called on the health authorities to listen to their views. And they already planning another rally.

Karl Deitch, who was one of the main organisers, was delighted. He said: “Many, many, many thanks for everyone who turned up today.

“We are a fabulous community and each and everyone deserves a pat on the back.”

Others were quick to voice their support for the protest.
