Sporting stars in Huddersfield have thrown their not inconsiderable weight behind the A & E campaign at the town’s Infirmary.

Huddersfield Giants players have backed the Examiner’s campaign to save Huddersfield Royal Infirmary’s A & E department.

Eorl Crabtree, Jermaine McGillvary and Michael Lawrence, as well as head coach Paul Anderson, took time out from preparing for their opening Super League XXI game of the season at St Helens on Friday to publicly support the Examiner’s appeal.

With Crabtree, McGillvary and Lawrence all hailing from Huddersfield, the campaign is very close to their hearts.

Family and friends of the trio have all used the lifesaving facility in the past, and have voiced their concern that their town could be about to lose such a vital and important service.

McGillvary, who played football before he took up rugby, said: “I got a nasty gash across my face while playing and they did a great job.

“Saving A & E at Huddersfield is massively important”.

And prop Eorl Crabtree said: “The plan to shut services at Huddersfield and move them to Halifax is absolutely impossible.

“You cannot put a price on saving lives.

“It would be a terrible loss to the town and there has to be a way of saving A & E services at the Infirmary.”

A&E shake-up
