AN extra £1.6m for West Yorkshire Police has been welcomed by Calder Valley MP Chris McCafferty.

The special grant, announced by Home Secretary Charles Clarke, will go towards the costs of the investigation into the terrorist attacks in London last July.

The bill for the West Yorkshire force's inquiry into the bombings, which killed 52 people, is expected to be at least £6m.

Ms McCafferty said: "I have been working with my West Yorkshire colleagues to convince the Home Secretary that there was a case for special funding for the local police.

"This investigation is without precedent. It has made huge demands on police resources and the work is continuing."

The blasts were triggered by four suicide bombers from West Yorkshire.

Three Tube trains and a bus were blown apart.

Two of the killers were Jermaine Lindsay, 19, who used to live in Rawthorpe, and Mohammad Sidique Khan, 30, who lived at Thornhill Lees, Dewsbury.

The other two were Shehzhad Tanweer and Hasib Hussain, both of Leeds.
