A Church of England village school is “truly a special place”.

Those are the words of Ofsted following its inspection of Scissett CofE (VA) First School.

The two visiting inspectors wrote a string of superlatives to describe the school, its staff, pupils and achievements. They graded the 172-pupil school as outstanding in all areas.

It is the third consecutive Outstanding rating for the school, which also received top marks in 2006 and 2009.

Inspectors said: “Pupils’ achievements are impressive. They make rapid progress as they move through the school and, by the end of Year 5, their attainment in reading, writing and mathematics is significantly above the expectations for their age.

“Behaviour in lessons and around the school is exemplary. Pupils enjoy being at school

Much teaching is outstanding and it is never less than consistently good. This has resulted in the very high standards being sustained since the last inspection.

“The headteacher (Elaine Watson) is an exceptional leader and has a strong impact on improving the quality of teaching and raising all pupils’ standards. She is highly committed to ensuring that pupils have the best possible education, and is highly ambitious for the school’s future.

Scissett First School.

“The headteacher is ably supported by the very effective senior leadership team and the extremely committed governing body.

“The school has the overwhelming support of parents. They value the work of the school and would recommend it to other parents without reservation.”

Staff, parents and pupils were all delighted with the latest rating, but they are not resting on their laurels.

Headteacher Elaine Watson said: “We are delighted to have maintained an Outstanding rating, and I would like to thank my wonderful staff team for all their efforts.

“However, at Scissett First School we are never complacent, and for us it is ‘business as usual.’ We will continue to strive to provide the best education that we possibly can for all our pupils and will continue to work towards the aspects in our school development plan to make our school the best it can be.”
