TWO drivers were badly hurt in a head-on smash above Marsden .

Both were trapped in the mangled wreckage of their vehicles after the impact on Manchester Road at 5.40pm yesterday.

The smash happened on a bend close to the landmark Motorman’s Cafe and one of the cars is believed to have gone on to the wrong side of the road.

A traffic-calming scheme is currently being constructed at that spot.

Retired engineer Steve Lumb, who lives nearby, said: “I was in a field near my home when I heard a loud thud.

“I ran over to see that two cars had crashed head-on and were both so badly damaged I couldn’t make out what kind of cars they were.

“One ended up on the kerb and the other was on the carriageway.”

He said several police vehicles were called to the scene along with ambulances and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance .

“I’ve never seen so many police,” said Mr Lumb. “There have been accidents here before – especially in the last two or three years – and Kirklees is now carrying out a traffic calming scheme at this site reducing the two uphill lanes to one.”

Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles and had to be cut free by firefighters.

One of the drivers was flown from the scene in the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the other was taken in a road ambulance.

Huddersfield fire station crew manager Chris King said: “Two male drivers in their 40s were trapped in their respective vehicles. We used cutting equipment to remove the roofs and used long boards to extract them to allow paramedics on scene.

“They were trapped for around 40 minutes.

“Both casualties suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospital.”

The road was shut for several hours after the crash while police accident investigation experts worked at the scene.
