Health chiefs leading the review into Huddersfield and Calderdale care have said they will decide what happens - not hospital chiefs.

Hospital leaders, including the medical director of HRI and CRH, Barbara Crosse, have said they would prefer to keep one A&E open at Huddersfield and make Halifax a specialist centre for planned care.

But leaders of the two clinical commissioning groups have said “it’s not their decision”.

Dr Matt Walsh, Chief Officer of Calderdale Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Carol McKenna, Chief Officer of Greater Huddersfield CCG, said: “The hospital trust may have given their view on a preferred way of doing things in future – as they are entitled to do as a key stakeholder and service provider – but it is not their decision, it is the CCGs’ responsibility.

“This is not just about A&E in Calderdale – or Huddersfield for that matter – it is about a much bigger transformation of all aspects of health and social care for almost half a million people across the whole Calderdale and Greater Huddersfield area.

The ambition of both CCGs is to do the best it can for all local residents. We will only make major changes where they make services and outcomes for patients better.

“No decisions have been made about where services – including specialist emergency – will be in future and nor will there be until we have had a thorough dialogue with a wide range of stakeholders including patients, the public, MPs and other elected members and others before we even define what the options for public consultation will be.”
