BLOOD donors in Huddersfield are being encouraged to give blood to save lives on Monday.

October often brings the start of the cold and flu season, which can prevent existing donors from giving blood.

With only 4% of the eligible population regularly donating, the NHS says that it’s important for others come forward.

Platelets, the vital blood clotting component, only have a five-day shelf life.

An NHS spokesman said: “We are urging donors to come forward this month to help maintain blood stocks.

“If you are generally in good health, you could potentially help to save up to three lives with every donation you give.

“Colds and flu can have a knock-on effect with blood stocks, this is why we need people to act now to help save and improve patients’ lives.”

Blood donation sessions are being held on Monday from 2pm to 4pm and from 5pm to 7.30pm at the Methodist Mission, Lord Street, Huddersfield.
