RAWTHORPE Junior School is the healthiest school in Kirklees - and that's official.

The school has become the first in the district to be successfully re-assessed for the Kirklees Healthy School Award.

It was the first school in the area to earn the award in 1999 and it is the first school to receive the award for a second time.

Assistant headteacher Brian Williams said the healthy school message was central to pupils, the curriculum and staff.

He said the school was "sweet-free" with children being rewarded with fruit or small gifts rather than sweets for achievement and good behaviour.

A healthy tuck-shop sells all types of fruit each breaktime and a newly refurbished playground, including a ballcourt and basketball nets, ensure pupils are active during lesson free times.

Pupil playleaders help children from lower school enjoy an active healthy playtime.

Staff also abide by the school's healthy message enjoying the healthy tuckshop, drinking free chilled water and enjoying a smoke-free environment.
