PEOPLE over 60 in the Newsome area are being encouraged to take up a free insulation offer.

Free loft and cavity wall insulation, draught-proofing and four low-energy lightbulbs are offered to any private householder over 60, regardless of their income.

The project has been funded by the Government's Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.

The scheme not only reduces fuel bills, it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions and helps people avoid cold-related illnesses.

Kirklees Green Party Clr Andrew Cooper said: "Just as many people over 60 get a flu jab at this time of year, it is also important to ensure the home environment is warm and healthy.

"Insulation helps prevent the conditions which are the cause of many illnesses among pensioners during the winter months."

The scheme is being piloted in Newsome but may be extended across Kirklees. Newsome householders who wish to take advantage of the scheme should contact Kirklees Energy Services on 01484 351550.
