Heckmondwike Grammar School is the tops in Kirklees.

The school has the best record of all the high schools in the area, according to the latest GCSE results.

But it was beaten into top spot in a chart of high schools in Calderdale and Kirklees by The North Halifax Grammar School, which saw 99% of its pupils achieving at least five GCSEs at A* to C including English and Maths in 2015, with 84% passing the tough English Baccalaureate. Heckmondwike had 98% success rate.

Across England, the proportion of pupils achieving at least five GCSEs at A* to C including English and Maths increased by 0.2 percentage points, with 52.8 per cent of pupils in all schools, and 56.1 per cent of pupils in state-funded schools achieving the measure in 2015.

In state-funded schools, 38.6 per cent of pupils entered, and 23.9 per cent achieved, the English Baccalaureate (EBacc).

In Kirklees’ Top 10, the Heckmondwike school was followed by King James’s School at Almondbury, which saw 81% of students gain at least five A to C grades.

Others in the list were Batley Grammar, Honley high, Trinity Academy, Holmfirth High, Rastrick High and Salendine Nook Academy.

Today’s figures show converter academies outperformed the national average by 7.2 percentage points, with 64.3% of pupils achieving at least five GCSEs at 5 A*-C including English and maths.

Sponsored academies saw a rise in the number of pupils reaching the expected standard compared to last year. Results in sponsored academies open for two academic years have improved by 2.3 percentage points since 2014.

At A Level, for the first time, more than half of entries are now in the key facilitating subjects which universities and employers say keep people’s options open. More girls are choosing to study science and maths at A Level - with the number studying these subjects rising across the board compared to 2010.

The list is sorted by the proportion of pupils gaining at least five GCSEs at A* to C including Maths and English, then the proportion of pupils passing the English Baccalaureate and then by average points score (if needed).
