CLEARER information is needed on how the public can report firework misuse, it was claimed today.

Labour councillors who made the call said many people were unaware of how to report any breaches of new laws.

Police, fire service and trading standards departments are responsible for different parts of the legislation.

Kirklees Council's Labour group leader Clr Mehboob Khan said it might all be too confusing.

He said: "Clear information for the public is essential and will help to ensure that people can contact the correct public body responsible for enforcement of these new laws.

"Otherwise there could be confusion on whom to approach to report alleged criminal activity."

From last month it became illegal to let fireworks off between 11pm and 7am and for retailers to sell fireworks that are louder than 120 decibels.

Clr Khan said that in the run-up to November 5 councillors received frequent complaints about misuse of fireworks such as these being let off in streets or late at night.

He said: "The curfew times are sensible and should not prevent people from responsible enjoyment of fireworks.

"Retailers need to be constantly vigilant about not selling fireworks to under-age customers and ensure that their stock confirms to the regulatory noise limits."

The curfew hour will be later on some occasions during the year when fireworks are normally used for traditional or cultural events.

These are Diwali Night, the Chinese New Year and New Year's Eve, when the curfew will not start until 1am. On November 5 the curfew will begin at midnight.
