A HUDDERSFIELD woman and a support coach who works in the town have been crowned Community Champions at an awards ceremony in Leeds.

Dawn Kellet, from Dalton, and Tracy Hudson, from Ainsworth, near Bolton, won the awards for using modest Government grants to establish facilities which have improved people's quality of life.

Dawn used her grant to set up a football team for Asian women at Young Batley Centre.

The team began as a five-a-side squad, then progressed to the full eleven.

Dawn hopes to enter the team in a league with regular fixtures.

When Tracy stepped down as craft group leader at Huddersfield's Womenspace she taught a group of refugee mothers to help run the group.

The ceremony, hosted by ITV presenter Gaynor Barnes, presented each winner with a £2,000 grant from the Government's Department for Education and Skills to boost their schemes.
