OFFENDERS supervised by West Yorkshire Probation carried out more than 313,000 hours of unpaid work over the last 12 months.

The work ranged from sorting out sandbags in flood-hit areas of Calderdale during this summer floods to taking part in projects helping elderly people.

The service’s annual review reveals that it has worked in partnership with charities and good causes including Help the Aged in Leeds.

The review also outlined the programmes which probation staff can use to change offenders’ behaviour by changing the way they think.

Specialised programmes deal with drink-drivers, sex offenders, binge drinkers, offenders hooked on drugs or booze, people convicted of domestic violence and racially-motivated offending.

Also helped are people needing to go on anger management courses.

Probation staff also contacted victims of serious sexual or violent offenders throughout the year and kept them informed about the offender’s sentence.
