THE next six combined library and information centres have been named by Kirklees Council.

Holmfirth, Meltham, Mirfield, Batley, Heckmondwike and Cleckheaton have been chosen for the one-stop centres.

Services now in separate cash and information offices will be moved into existing library buildings.

They are being developed after the success of two pilot schemes in Skelmanthorpe and Birstall.

Clr John Smithson, the council's deputy leader, said: "It makes sense that instead of having people trailing from one building to another seeking advice and support they should be able to get them all in one building.

"It is much more convenient, efficient and provides a much better service."

The services provided at the six cash and information offices will be transferred to the libraries over the next year, along with the staff.

Clr Smithson added: "When the programme is completed there will be more than 20 of these library and information centres across the district."
