A HUDDERSFIELD solicitors firm and a charity shop are helping reduce plastic bag waste.

Ridley & Hall, at Market Street, have issued staff with reusable and biodegradable cotton bags for shopping.

The same bags were issued from the firm’s stand at the Kidz Up North exhibition at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton, earlier this month.

Senior partner Nigel Priestley said: “Environmental issues are important to us and we wanted to be able to make a difference in the workplace as we do at home. The whole firm has got wholeheartedly behind the initiative.”

Meanwhile, the Scope charity shop at New Street is encouraging people to donate unwanted items by visiting the shop rather than relying on the charity’s home collection service.

The disability organisation delivers six million plastic collection bags each year, but only 15% of its special bags are returned.

Scope hopes the new initiative will cut collection van journeys and bogus collections. But the service will still operate for those with mobility problems.

Manager Charlotte Maloney said: “We’re not asking people to make a special trip, but to drop off goods in person as part of their regular outing or shopping trip in town. In this way, you are doing your bit for the environment as well as supporting Scope.”
