Local artist David Gilhooley hopes to be quick on the draw.

He needs to be if he is to be successful in an unusual world record attempt.

David, of Hepworth, is planning to smash the world record for drawing portraits or caricatures and raise money for a charity close to his heart.

The Hepworth man will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for The Highest Number of Portraits/Caricatures in a 12 Hour Period, currently held by Gary Javier of Puerto Rico at a staggering one per 4.5mins. He managed 160 but David hopes to beat that.

But he needs help: he needs people to come forward as models.

The event is scheduled to take place at his local Hepworth pub, The Butchers Arms, on December 6, between 9am and 9pm..

“My fear is running out of heads to draw”, says David, who specialises in drawing wedding portraits.

“The actual drawing doesn’t worry me. I went along to a music festival and came away with an album full of Irish musicians. I can do a drawing in a few minutes but the worry is if my line of models dries up, the record won’t happen.

“There are couple of events on at the pub that day so I hope to persuade people there to join in and I have been liaising with Hepworth United football club, who will have games that day.”

The event came about by David wanting to raise funds for The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

“It’s 20 years since Roy’s passing. He was born in nearby Scholes and I thought it would be fitting to come up with a novel ‘Record Breaker’ fundraiser”.

Anyone wishing to have their portrait drawn is to simply turn up on the day with a minimum donation of £2. Dogs are welcome too!
