A HOLME Valley housewife is hoping to prove she’s Britain’s toughest “mudder”.

Sally Hampshire, 52, from Hepworth, will be attempting to complete the Tough Mudder assault course challenge next month.

The course, at Kettering, Northamptonshire, is based on the type used to train US special forces troops.

The 12-mile slog includes runs, crawls and wades through mud, icy water, barbed wire and even fire together with wall and cargo net climbs and monkey bar swings.

Sally, her son Tom, 20, and her daughters’ boyfriends, Will and James, will be tackling the course to raise cash for Orchid.

The charity supports men with cancer and raises awareness of cancers affecting men, such as testicular and prostate cancer.

Sally, a former children’s physiotherapist, was inspired to take the challenge by her brother Adam Hainsworth, who is in remission for testicular cancer, and her uncle David Hainsworth who is battling prostate cancer.

Sally and her fellow hopefuls have been doing long-distance runs and weight training.

She has achieved respectable finishes in the Sheffield Marathon and Hepworth Dryad, but admitted: “We’ve never done anything like this before.

“I always wanted to do an assault course but I’m not sure how that’s going to be combining it with a half-marathon.

“I’m nervous but I’m looking forward to it and the feeling I’ll get when I’ve finished it in one piece...

“The boys are very excited because it’s very macho. I’ve asked them to bench press my weight so they can throw me over one of the obstacles if necessary!”
