Pupils at Marsden Junior School are to get a lesson in rock.

But instead of donning wigs and practising the air guitar, the schoolchildren are honing their carving skills as top sculptor Michael Disley pays a visit.

The Hepworth stone sculptor, who has sculptures across the UK, Europe and Japan, is running his popular “School of Rock” workshop.

The classes, commissioned by Yorkshire Water and running throughout the week from Monday June 6, will see the 200 youngsters unleash their creativity as they are each given a sandstone tablet to carve and keep.

Michael said: “I’m really looking forward to working with the students at Marsden School. Sculpting stone is usually something they’ve never done before so the students are always really excited.

“It’s great that all the children are getting to take part in a workshop and I’m expecting some great works of art!”

Yorkshire Water have organised the classes as a way to “give back” to the community while they carry out a £5million project to restore the spillway at Butterley Reservoir in Marsden.

The work is expected to end at the close of 2017, in which time Yorkshire Water will also sponsor Marsden Jazz Festival.

John Bond, from the company, said: “Michael is a local sculptor which links in well with our work on the stone spillway.

“We wanted to offer the school something different which we hope the students will enjoy and I’m really looking forward to visiting the school and seeing what the children have created.”
