TWO cricketers have been hailed as heroes for saving a man's life.

Adam Turner and John Senior gave veteran crown green bowler Colin Wigmore vital life-saving treatment after he collapsed with a cardiac arrest at Slaithwaite Cricket and Bowling Club.

They worked on him for up to 20 minutes while the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, a doctor and a paramedic ambulance rushed to the scene at Hill Top at 4.30pm on Saturday.

Mr Wigmore - 73 last Friday - was playing for Lowerhouses Community Bowling Club in a Littlewood Cup game against Almondbury Liberal Club when he collapsed.

Adam, 22, of Golcar, had notched up 113 runs for Slaithwaite Seconds against Holmfirth and the teams had just finished tea when someone ran in asking if anyone knew first aid.

Adam, a firefighter in Bradford, and 38-year-old John rushed to help.

Adam had done first aid with the fire service and John, of Slaithwaite, works at Elland firm Andy Thornton Architectural Antiques in Elland and had done a Save A Life course this month.

Adam said: "Colin appeared lifeless when we got to him. I couldn't find a pulse and he wasn't breathing."

John gave heart massage and Adam the kiss of life.

Adam added: "Colin still appeared lifeless, but we had to carry on. Every now and then he gave a sigh, so we knew air was getting in."

The air ambulance landed on the bowling green. A doctor and an ambulance then arrived.

Adam said: "The doctor was ready to use the defibrillator to shock Colin's heart, but when they attached him to at monitor they discovered it was beating."

Mr Wigmore is "comfortable" in Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

It was a busy time for Adam. He scored his first century for Slaithwaite, saved a life, went to work on Saturday evening and marked his birthday on Sunday.
