Two people were saved from a fire by a passing group of have-a-go heroes who smashed their way into a building to wake them up.

The two residents, who were asleep while their kitchen burned, were led to safety by a group of three men and a woman, who had spotted flames flickering in their window and could hear the smoke alarm.

But to get into the block of flats in Dewsbury, they had to kick in both external and internal doors.

Having broken down the doors the group located the occupants, a 37-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man, and led them to safety.

It is thought the incident just before 1am today at Gladstone Court off Staincliffe Road, was sparked by a chip pan that had been left on.

One of the rescuing group, a 30-year-old woman, suffered smoke inhalation injuries.

She was treated with oxygen by fire fighters.

The couple in the flat also suffered smoke inhalation and all three were taken to hospital for check ups.

Firefighters from Dewsbury arrived to tackle the incident but the flames had gone out.
