A heroin addict begged to be sent to jail after carrying out two thefts.

Angela Alderson, of Causeway Head, Sowerby Bridge, told her solicitor that undergoing a detox while imprisoned was the only way she could kick her habit.

Alderson, 41, pleaded guilty to two counts of alcohol theft from the Co-operative supermarket on Westbourne Road on July 7 and 8, which was valued at £182.

Mike Sisson-Pell, mitigating, said: “Ms Alderson is struggling with a heroin addiction.

“She has had a community based penalty but was not able to comply.

“The situation is so bad that she if another was imposed she knows she would continue to offend.

“She said that after paying for essentials she is left with nothing to live on so the only way to fund her habit is stealing.

“The only way, she says, for her to cope is to do a detox in prison.

“Ms Alderson wants to get clean so she can be a grandma that her children look up to.”

Michael Fanning, district judge, was left with no alternative but to send her to prison.

“You have a long record of this sort of offence, which is driven by your drug addition.

“It’s a shame you don’t feel that you can work with a drug rehabilitation order instead of going to prison.

“You will serve six weeks and I hope that is enough to break your habit.”

Mr Fanning also gave Alderson a supervision order to help her recovery, which will be activated when she is freed.

She was also ordered to pay £115 in court costs.
