IT’S an idea that sounds pure pie in the sky.

But celebrity chef and food “experimenter” Heston Blumenthal created a pub made entirely from food – with a little help from Huddersfield piemaker Andrew Jones.

And the results can be seen in the next episode of Heston’s Fantastical Food, which will be screened at 9pm tomorrow on Channel 4.

The series aims to stir memories of childhood – with Heston taking on outlandish food-based challenges such as creating an outsized school lunchbox, building a massive ice cream and constructing a giant sweetshop.

A Pub in A Pie recalls the days when children were not allowed in pubs and had to sit outside drinking lemonade and eating crisps while the adults went inside.

Andrew Jones, of Lockwood-based AJ Pies & Pastries, was asked to take part because the company already supplies its award-winning figit pies (pork pie with apple and stuffing) to one of Heston’s pubs, The Hind’s Head, at Bray, near Windsor.

Andrew’s brief was to cook 200 gala pies to provide the “bricks” for the TV pub – The Heston Arms – and 130 sheets of puff pastry, each measuring 18ins by 30ins, to provide the roof tiles.

The programme makers filmed Andrew and Heston at the Lockwood factory making the pies.

Andrew also made a number of pie casings, so Heston could come up with his own fillings.

Later, the pub was constructed in secrecy in a field in North Wales before being unveiled – and made to look bigger using a bit of computer wizardry.

Other edible delights at the Heston hostelry included a snooker table with green baize made from pea and mint puree and snooker balls made from scotch eggs, 2ft-long pork scratchings and beer deliberately pulled flat so Heston could concoct a “head” flavoured with sausage rolls!

Andrew said: “It put a bit of pressure on the factory for a few days because we still had to meet all our regular orders. I ended up doing most of the work myself.”

But he added: “We relished the chance to work with Heston and to contribute to his new show.

“People will have to watch the show to find out exactly how it all turns out.”

During the episode Heston builds a giant, edible pie pub, makes a billiard table from cod, tartare sauce and pea mousse with pickled egg billiard balls, a supersized pork scratching big enough to feed the entire village and a customised fruit machine that pays out its jackpot in snacks.

Next year, Andrew Jones, will notch up 25 years supplying pies and pasties to the independent and retail sectors – and is now working on developing new varieties for 2013.

Earlier this year, AJ Pies and Pastries won awards for its pork pie and stilton, steak and ale pie, pork pie and meat and potato pie at the 2012 Great Taste Awards and British Pie Awards.

It is also supplying Andrew Jones branded pies to Sainsbury’s stores across Yorkshire.
