They are images familiar to so many of us in this area.

But the Colne Valley Calendar 2014 is also likely to be a big hit thousands of miles from home.

Many of the 1,000 calendars produced for the new issue are destined for ex-pats in every corner of the world, says Marsden librarian Diane Wood.

She was one of the organisers of the annual competition for amateur photographers to come up with the pictures to be selected for the calendar.

Many of them got together this week to receive framed copies of their work as the new calendar was unveiled at Marsden Library.

Among them was eight-year-old Holly Brewster, of Bolster Moor.

Holly’s stunning picture of Highland cattle in a local farmer’s field has been chosen as one of the winning entries.

“She’s our youngest-ever winner and it was a lovely photo”, said Diane.

“There were about 70 images in all and the standard was very high.

“The ones we have chosen for the calendar are traditional Colne Valley scenes, with the canal, the River Colne, local churches and village scenes all prominent.

“The calendar has been a tradition for several years and I inherited it when the local Information Point merged with the library. It used to be focused on Marsden and Slaithwaite, but now we have extended it to take in Golcar and Linthwaite”.

The calendars have gone on sale at outlets in the Colne Valley.

The winning photographers were presented with enlarged framed images of their winning photos courtesy of sponsors Cubecure, Freshfields and Enjoy Photography.

The Christmas lights committees of Marsden and Slaithwaite benefit from the sale of the calendar which is sold all over the world, including ex-valley dwellers now living in Australia and Canada who want a reminder of what they are missing.

Calendars can be purchased for £6 from library and information centres at Marsden, Slaithwaite, Golcar and Meltham.
