FUN-LOVING Elland residents were in high party spirits at their annual carnival.

Although the number of floats was down because of insurance costs, a grand display drew crowds from Elland and surrounding villages.

The carnival began with a procession of classic cars and motorbikes, which set off from Westgate.

This was followed by the main parade of carnival floats, led by Huddersfield Brass Ensemble.

The procession set off from Jepson Lane, wound its way through Savile Road, South Lane, Charles Street, Catherine Street, Southgate and Church Lane before arriving at the carnival field at fire-extinguisher firm Nu-Swift on Wistons Lane.

Visitors enjoyed Punch and Judy shows, miniature train rides, a children's fairground and a bouncy castle.

There was also a range of stalls and a baby show at the Savage Hall on Eastgate.

The fancy dress competition was won by Michaela Hinks, who dressed up as a scarecrow.

All the proceeds from the event will go to local charities.

The running costs were paid for from the profits of a social evening and raffle.
