Too few pupils make good progress at a Liversedge primary school.

That’s the opinion of Ofsted, which has just rated Hightown Junior Infant and Nursery School as 3 – Requires Improvement.

The 217-pupil Hightown Road school received a Grade 3 at its previous inspection 18 months ago, but the rating was then regarded as ‘Satisfactory’.

Ofsted found teachers did not always take into account the different ability levels of pupils and standards at the end of Key Stage 1 fluctuated – although they have been below average for the last two years.

Inspectors said teachers’ marking could improve, pupils’ attendance was below average and governors lacked the skill to challenge performance.

But they did find a number of positive aspects.

Children got off to a good start in the nursery, standards at the end of Year 6 were rising and teaching was good to outstanding in nursery and Year 6.
