AN ELDERLY man is still critically ill in hospital after a hit- and-run incident.

Alan Naylor, 80, from Gomersal, was hit by a vehicle in New North Road, Heckmondwike.

The incident happened at about 9.45pm on Wednesday.

Mr Naylor was found lying in the road and is being treated at Dewsbury District Hospital.

The vehicle failed to stop.

Police are appealing for any witnessed to come forward.

Det Insp Andy Parr, of Kirklees CID, is leading the investigation.

He told the Examiner: "It was very serious. Mr Naylor is on a life-support machine and his family are distraught.

"We're appealing for witnesses to bring the case to a speedy conclusion.

"At this stage we are appealing for anyone who was near the junction of Six Lane Ends, New North Road, Leeds Road and Gomersal Road, between 9.15pm and 10.15pm on Wednesday to contact us.

"Did anyone notice any car driving in an unusual or erratic manner?

"We know that the vehicle will have had accident damage.

"Do you know anyone who has been in a collision since 9.15pm on Wednesday? Have you noticed a car with some unexplained recent damage?

"We would appeal for anyone in the vehicle to come forward.

"It is only a matter of time before we trace the person responsible and we want them to come to us before we find them."
