It was a village at the centre of the world just 12 months ago.

Now people living in Holme hope to build on the community spirit generated by the Tour de France and are planning a special village festival next month.

Tens of thousands of people were at Holme and Holme Moss for the stunning spectacle of the Grand Depart in July 2014 and it brought together many people living in the moorland village.

Mary Walker, one of those behind the project, said: “This is a first for Holme and we are building on the huge community spirit engendered by the Grand Depart last July.

“The Produce Festival on September 5 will be held at Lane Farm in Lane and there be all the usual produce competitions such as cakes, bakery, jams and chutneys, and fruit and vegetable competitions.

“We are also planning competitions for art, sculpture and photography. We will have music, and pony rides as well as stalls selling all sorts of wares and delicacies. We want to invite people from far and near to participate”.

The community spirit came to the fore first in 2012 when 350 people turned out for a Jubilee Picnic.

People in Holme decided to take on all the challenges and opportunities offered by the Tour de France and they formed a Residents Association to improve facilities for visitors in Holme. They worked together as a community team to produce venues, mini festivals and entertainments for the thousands of visitors over the whole week preceding the Tour.

At one end of the village the Yorkshire Yurt Festival had a six day programme of music, poetry, performance and storytelling in a space adorned by huge felt panels depicting Yorkshire landscapes.

In the centre of the village the Fleece provided bands and entertainment as well as hospitality and food. And the Lane Farm Festival had a programme of music and dancing at the top end up in Lane.

Mary added: “Since then village residents felt they would love to build on this sense of community and excitement – to reach out and welcome visitors to this idyllic Pennine village at the feet of the iconic landmark of Holme Moss.

“A regular Produce Festival in September will be a major focus within the village itself, but also be a great opportunity to invite outsiders in from the whole area. This year’s new festival is hopefully just the seed of something that will develop and ‘flower’ in the years to come”.
