A HOLMFIRTH couple have celebrated 60 happy years marriage and received a letter of congratulations from the Queen.

Walter and Phyllis Gale married at Holmbridge Church on December 6, 1952.

Walter, 84, worked for the Yorkshire Electricity Board for nearly 40 years and was a part-time firefighter at Holmfirth for 22 years, rising through the ranks to sub-officer.

Phyllis, 78, was a housewife and raised their two sons, Andrew and Nigel.

She also worked as a dinner lady in Netherthong where she enjoyed seeing many local children grow up.

The couple have shared many happy times over the years and have fond memories, particularly their golden wedding celebration.

And now, a decade later, they will join family and friends once more to mark their diamond wedding anniversary at The Huntsman Inn above Holmfirth.

Asked the secret of their long marriage Phyllis said: “It’s just give and take.”

She said Walter, who is now disabled, retired in 1985 due to ill health.

The couple are proud grandparents to five grandchildren.
