They’re hoping to experience the culture of Europe – through the windows of a clapped out 13-year-old Fiat Punto.

Holmfirth petrolheads Keith Marshall and Leigh Guillfoyle are taking part in the annual Scumrun rally challenge travelling 3,000 miles across the continent in an old banger worth less than £500.

The route is kept secret until the beginning of the event which starts on May 19 and finishes on May 23.

The couple are no strangers to the challenge. While Leigh has already done the challenge once before, this year’s rally will be Keith’s eighth attempt.

He said: “I used to do it a lot with friends and on my own. It’s a great way to see Europe’s beautiful cities and sights, have a laugh and at the same time do something for a good cause.”

Scumrun’s participants raise money for a selected children’s charity, raising £176,000 last year for Type 1 diabetes cause JDRF.

Keith has raised £7,000 over the years he has taken part and this year will be no different as they raise funds for Action For A-T, providing research into life-limiting genetic disorder Ataxia Telangiectasia.

“The main rule of the rally is that the vehicle has to be worth less than £500”, said Keith, who lectures in car mechanics across West Yorkshire.

“But as I’ve been doing this for so long we thought we’d go the extra mile, so we tried to find a car for less than £200.”

The first vehicle the couple found was this tired Punto from 2003 designated for the scrapyard.

Keith said: “It needed some work doing to it, but it was a good deal.”

The duo now plan to cover it in paint splat stickers which people can buy. One will have a prize number underneath for a night away at Holmfirth’s Corn Lodge Guesthouse.

“We thought it would be a good way to kickstart the fundraising”, Keith added.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing some more of Europe again and meeting people from this year’s charity.”

Keith said he has explored places from Paris, Amsterdam, Pamplona, Barcelona, Zurich and Prague in his years doing the rally.

“My favourite definitely has to be Amsterdam,” he said.
